Ecole d'Espoir

In January 2011, Pencils for Kids officially opened its third school in Liboré, in a village called Gorouberi. This was the first ever school for the villagers in Gorouberi and the excitement was palpable. It was named "une école d'espoir" or School of Hope by our generous donors, offering hope to a new generation of young children. Another donor's three children each named the three classrooms in the school using the local language of Zarma: Lakkal - Wisdom, Beerey - Knowledge and Gaabi - Strength. Many more schools are needed as children continue to learn in schools without walls or desks.

Inspirational Story

After rehearsal I talked with a wonderful man in Liboré. He shared his story with me and once again my insides cried out to say, "Why does it have to be this way?” He is a soft-spoken, handsome, well educated man, who grew up in the villages and, against all odds, was able to graduate university.
